Confusion follows reports of Tom Petty death after heart attack
The rock star has been hospitalized at the age of 66 and the LAPD has now apologized for ‘inadvertently’ providing information about his death
Monday 2 October 2017 21.20 BST Last modified on Monday 2 October 2017 22.32 BST
Conflicting reports have emerged over the death of Tom Petty who has experienced a heart attack at the age of 66.

The singer-songwriter was reportedly rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica hospital on Monday after being found unconscious in his Malibu home. According to an initial LAPD source via CBS News and Variety, he was taken off life support soon after yet later tweets claim that the department has “no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty” and any information has been “inadvertently provided”.

He gained fame as part of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the late 1970s, a band that was seen as integral to the heartland rock movement. Their biggest hits included I Won’t Back Down and American Girl.

Petty was originally part of country rock band Mudcrutch who gained regional popularity but didn’t attract a mainstream audience. They later reformed in 2007 but originally split after Petty and other members joined the Heartbreakers. In 1977 the band gained success with the song Breakdown but it was their second album You’re Gonna Get It! that became a top 40 hit.

Throughout the 80s, the band enjoyed major hits including You Got Lucky and Change of Heart and collaborated with Bob Dylan as well as Stevie Nicks. Petty continued to work with Dylan as part of the band Traveling Wilburys alongside Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne.

“It’s shocking, crushing news,” Bob Dylan told Rolling Stone in an earlier statement. “I thought the world of Tom. He was great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.”

Petty also enjoyed solo success but always returned back to the Heartbreakers, releasing their final album in 2014. “I don’t see that I have anything to offer as a solo artist that I couldn’t do within the group better,” he told the Sun. “We get along so well it’s embarrassing really. It’s a love fest!”

The band had been on a 40th anniversary tour since April that finished last week at the Hollywood Bowl. In an interview with Rolling Stone last December, he suggested it would probably be his last.

“We’re all on the backside of our 60s,” he said. “I have a granddaughter now I’d like to see as much as I can. I don’t want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that’s a lot of time.”

Petty has also been outspoken in his protection of the rights of artists, taking issue with record companies on a number of occasions over what he believed to be unjust practices. Earlier this year he was named MusiCares person of the year for his “career-long interest in defending artists’ rights” as well as for his charitable work with the homeless population of Los Angeles.

Throughout his career, he sold more than 80m records worldwide. Tributes have been arriving on Twitter from entertainment industry figures, including Cameron Crowe, Stephen King, Ryan Adams, Ezra Koenig and Chuck D.

Six Strikes Piracy Scheme May Be Dead But Those Warnings Keep on Coming

By Andy on October 1, 2017
   C: 37

The so-called six-strikes anti-piracy scheme in the United States may be dead but file-sharers should be aware that they're still being monitored. Over the past several weeks there have been increasing reports of people receiving multiple copyright notices from various ISPs, something which puts accounts at risk.

After at least 15 years of Internet pirates being monitored by copyright holders, one might think that the message would’ve sunk in by now. For many, it definitely hasn’t.

Bottom line: when people use P2P networks and protocols (such as BitTorrent) to share files including movies and music, copyright holders are often right there, taking notes about what is going on, perhaps in preparation for further action.

That can take a couple of forms, including suing users or, more probably, firing off a warning notice to their Internet service providers. Those notices are a little like a speeding ticket, telling the subscriber off for sharing copyrighted material but letting them off the hook if they promise to be good in future.

In 2013, the warning notice process in the US was formalized into what was known as the Copyright Alert System, a program through which most Internet users could receive at least six piracy warning notices without having any serious action taken against them. In January 2017, without having made much visible progress, it was shut down.

In some corners of the web there are still users under the impression that since the “six strikes” scheme has been shut down, all of a sudden US Internet users can forget about receiving a warning notice. In reality, the complete opposite is true.

While it’s impossible to put figures on how many notices get sent out (ISPs are reluctant to share the data), monitoring of various piracy-focused sites and forums indicates that plenty of notices are still being sent to ISPs, who are cheerfully sending them on to subscribers.

Popular Zer0day Torrent Tracker Taken Offline By Mass Copyright Complaint

By Andy on October 14, 2017
   C: 0

A popular content-neutral torrent tracker has been forced offline following pressure from an anti-piracy outfit. Zer0day was tracking more than five million peers earlier this month but a mass complaint from SCPP, an outfit that represents Warner, Universal, Sony and thousands of others, caused its host to terminate service.

In January 2016, a BitTorrent enthusiast decided to launch a stand-alone tracker, purely for fun.

The Zer0day platform, which hosts no torrents, is a tracker in the purest sense, directing traffic between peers, no matter what content is involved and no matter where people are in the world.

With this type of tracker in short supply, it was soon utilized by The Pirate Bay and the now-defunct ExtraTorrent. By August 2016, it was tracking almost four million peers and a million torrents, a considerable contribution to the BitTorrent ecosystem.

After handling many ups and downs associated with a service of this type, the tracker eventually made it to the end of 2016 intact. This year it grew further still and by the end of September was tracking an impressive 5.5 million peers spread over 1.2 million torrents. Soon after, however, the tracker disappeared from the Internet without warning.

In an effort to find out what had happened, TorrentFreak contacted Zer0day’s operator who told us a familiar story. Without any warning at all, the site’s host pulled the plug on the service, despite having been paid 180 euros for hosting just a week earlier.

“We’re hereby informing you of the termination of your dedicated server due to a breach of our terms of service,” the host informed Zer0day.

“Hosting trackers on our servers that distribute infringing and copyrighted content is prohibited. This server was found to distribute such content. Should we identify additional similar activity in your services, we will be forced to close your account.”

Pirate Bay’s Iconic .SE Domain has Expired (Updated)

By Ernesto on October 16, 2017
   TorrentFreak news

The Pirate Bay's iconic .SE domain name has expired and will be deactivated soon if no action is taken. This means that, which played a central part in the site's history, is no longer redirecting to the most current Pirate Bay domain.

When The Pirate Bay first came online during the summer of 2003, its main point of access was

Since then the site has burnt through more than a dozen domains, trying to evade seizures or other legal threats.

For many years operated as the site’s main domain name. Earlier this year the site moved back to the good old .org again, and from the looks of it, TPB is ready to say farewell to the Swedish domain.

2017’s “Piracy is Dangerous” Rhetoric Was Digital Reefer Madness

By Andy on December 30, 2017
   C: 1

For much of 2017, major companies and their proxies involved in movies, TV shows, and live sports have tried to convince Internet pirates that their hobby is dangerous to their computers at best, their lives at worst. The campaign is the Reefer Madness of the digital era and it will prove equally as successful.

Chrome and Firefox Block 123movies Over “Harmful Programs”

By Ernesto on February 9, 2018
   C: 38

Chrome and Firefox are actively blocking direct access to the popular pirate streaming site 123movies, also known as 123movieshub and Gomovies. According to Google's Safe Browsing diagnostics service, the site contains "harmful programs," most likely triggered by suspicious advertisements running on the site.

With millions of visitors per day, 123movies(hub), also known as Gomovies, is one of the largest pirate streaming sites on the web.

Today, however, many visitors were welcomed by a dangerous-looking red banner instead of the usual homepage.

“The site ahead contains harmful programs,” Chrome warns its users. “Attackers on might attempt to trick you into installing programs that harm your browsing experience.”

It is not clear what the problem is in this particular case, but these type of notifications are often triggered by malicious or deceptive third-party advertising that has appeared on a site.

At least 17 dead in Florida school shooting, law enforcement says
By Emanuella Grinberg, Eric Levenson and Shimon Prokupecz, CNN

Updated 0222 GMT (1022 HKT) February 15, 2018
Police: At least 17 dead in FL school shooting
Broward County Superintendent Robert Runcie
Superintendent: We had no warning, indication

Teacher: I hid 19 students in the closet

Students: Fire alarm went off before shooting

Mom: My daughter told me to call 911

Police: High school shooter still at large

Police: Shots fired at Florida high school

Police: At least 17 dead in FL shotting

The suspect, 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz, is in custody. Cruz was expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons, and police are investigating his digital footprint, Sheriff Scott Israel said. So far, what they've found is "very, very disturbing," he said.
"It's a horrific, horrific day," Israel said. "Just pray for this city. Pray for this school, the parents, the folks that lost their lives."

Law enforcement agents transport the suspect in Wednesday's school shooting.

Law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shortly before 3 p.m. and encountered a chaotic scene.
Investigators believe the suspect pulled the fire alarm to draw people out of classrooms and increase the number of casualties, a law enforcement source told CNN. But the school already had performed a fire drill earlier in the day, leading some to think it was a false alarm.
As some left the building, others sought cover in classrooms as the school went into lockdown. Students used their phones to text loved ones and share videos and pictures on social media. One teacher, Melissa Falkowski, said she hid in a closet with 19 students from her newspaper class.
Falkowski credited the fire drill and other forms of training with saving lives. And yet, it didn't save enough.
"We could not have been more prepared for this situation, which is what makes it so frustrating," Falkowski told CNN's Anderson Cooper.

"We did everything that we were supposed to do. Broward County Schools has prepared us for this situation and still to have so many casualties ... for me, it's very emotional because I feel today like our government, our country has failed us and failed our kids and didn't keep us safe."
'It's really a blessing to still be alive'
Law enforcement sources said a .223 caliber, AR-15 style firearm was used in the shooting.
Freshman Kayden Hanafi said he heard two gunshots and saw people running out of another building on campus. As he and his classmates went into lockdown in a classroom, many thought the noise might have been firecrackers.
"It's really a blessing to still be alive," he said.

Nicole Baltzer, 18, said she was in trigonometry class about 10 minutes before the end of the school day when the fire alarm went off. As students evacuated, she heard six gunshots and everyone started running back inside the school, Baltzer said.
"I heard so many gunshots, at least like six. They were very close," Baltzer said.
A police officer told her to close her eyes as she walked past a classroom with broken glass, telling her "there's nothing good to see in there," she said.
A freshman named Aidan posted a photo on social media from inside his math class while on lockdown.

"We have been liberated. God bless, America," Aidan tweeted after being evacuated from the building. "Love each other. You may never know when it may be the last day you meet someone."
Terror in Florida's safest city
The shooting sent students and staff streaming out of the school. Some walked calmly with their hands up while others ran. According to a law enforcement source, the suspect initially mixed in with the crowd of students to try to get away, but it didn't work.
Anxious family members await news of their loved ones.
